Symptoms of sickle cell anemia usually appear in infants after they are 4 months old. However, blood tests can determine whether or not they have a mutated HBB gene.
Symptoms Include:
Random Pains in Body Organs or Joints: This is brought on by sickle cells getting caught in the veins and stopping oxygen from getting to the tissues, which can be seen in the picture.
Fatigue: All forms of anemia are similar in that they cause the body to have fewer red blood cells in circulation. This means that not enough oxygen can be carried through the body, which results in tiredness.
Swollen Hands and/or Feet: This occurs when blood flow is blocked from the hands and feet.
Delays in Growth During Puberty and Smaller Builds in Adults
Infections: The spleen, which helps prevent infection, can be damaged by sickle cells.
Vision Problems: The retina can be damaged when sickle cells block veins in the eyes.
